Board Members Recognized through NASB Awards of Achievement Program

The Central City Board of Education received its eighth Outstanding Board Award presented by the Nebraska Association of School Boards (NASB). Central City received this prestigious award for the first time in 1998-99. Out of 275 districts that belong to NASB, the Central City Board was one of 10 school boards that were recognized at York. The plaque presented to the board reads, “For continuing excellence as an outstanding board.”

Public demands for accountability have never been higher, nor have expectations for student achievement. In addition, state standards and the federal No Child Left Behind Act mandate that children perform at ever-increasing levels. But the resources to get the job done often are stretched thin. To ensure they are prepared to tackle the various challenges of the job, board members spend considerable time each year in attending training offered through the Nebraska Association of School Boards and the National School Boards Association.

According to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jeff West, “In order to carry out their roles effectively, it is important that board members keep abreast of changing times and circumstances. Our board is very active in state and national conferences which provide opportunities for them to explore new ideas and see what is being done throughout Nebraska and nationally.”

The NASB Awards of Achievement program is designed to recognize the time and commitment made by board members in continuing their education and their involvement in the Association. Points are awarded for participation in local, state and national activities which enhance effective board service.

“This is a turbulent time to be a leader in public education. Reorganization and accountability have focused the public's eyes on the work that public schools are doing. That's why it is important for board members to spend time with other school leaders in their area who share these same challenges and concerns” according to West.
