In the fifth grade Math program, the four basic operations are used in teaching many skills. A review of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers is taught. Accelerated Math is a program used to evaluate student's progress via a scanner and a computer. Accelerated math diagnoses a student's abilities and prints individual assignments for the student based on math objectives that have not been mastered.
In Science, concepts are taught from biological, physical, and earth science areas. Students develop a capacity for scientific ways of thinking. Students are enabled to use scientific knowledge and ways of thinking for personal and social purposes.
Major areas stressed in the fifth grade English are the following:
In Social Studies, the students work to establish a foundation of knowledge about the United States of America. Map skills are also stressed.
Basic reading skills are covered in the reading program. Instructional activities, leading to independence in reading are organized around these major categories:
Literary skills are stressed in areas recognizing biographies, classifying fantasies, and determined types of poetry. Students are taught the elements such as setting, plot, characters and theme. The program strives to develop a lively and ever-widening interest in reading.
The student is encouraged to use correct spelling in all subject areas. In doing this, the child is given a weekly lesson which includes sound-letter associations, proof-reading, and challenge words. Handwriting is stressed in that misformed letters result in misspelled words.
All fifth grade classes are co-ed and meet on alternating days for the entire year. The philosophy of the Central City Physical Education Department is to develop physically, mentally, emotionally and socially sound students through the use of individual team activities. The course stresses safety in all activities and includes: Ball and rope activities; tumbling; rhythms; modified games; gymnastics; basic skills; and Physical Fitness Testing.
The main focus of the fifth grade music is to learn how to read octavo music and to sing in two parts through the use of rounds and canons, ostimatos, partner songs, and two part harmony pieces. Fifth graders also work on vocal technique of breathing and vocal production. These students perform in two programs throughout the year.
The entire fifth grade class is shown the basic instruments of the band for two to three weeks, after that they must decide on an instrument and buy one of their choice. The students spend the rest of the year learning the basics of the instruments. The Band is involved in two concerts.

In the sixth grade Math program, the four basic operations are used in teaching many skills. A review of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers is taught. Fractions and decimals are also emphasized, using these four basic operations. Geometry, proportions, ratios, and percent are introduced. Students develop their skills of measurement in the areas of linear measurement, capacity and weight. In the sixth grade program, students are taught problem solving through application of math skills. Accelerated Math is a program used to evaluate student's progress via a scanner and a computer. The accelerated math program tracks a student's abilities and prints individual assignments for the student and continues to review objectives that have not been mastered.
In Science, concepts are taught from biological, physical, and earth science areas. The following performance skills are developed: Observing; measuring; describing; comparing; and classifying. The student is also taught a unit on Mental Health and a unit on Family and Social Health.
Major areas stressed in the sixth grade English are the following:
The 6th grade Social Studies program covers the countries of the Western Hemisphere historically and through the present. Students learn about ancient civilizations and the Age of Exploration. As countries are studied, they are compared and contrasted with our own nation. Throughout the year, geography skills and current events are stressed so that students have a broad knowledge of the world around them.
Basic reading skills are covered in the reading program. Instructional activities, leading to independence in reading are organized around four major categories:
Literary skills are stressed in short stories and novels, both fictional and non-fictional. Students are taught the elements of setting, plot, characters, and theme.

The students participate in programs throughout the year.
The sixth grade Band is for the students to learn the basics of playing an instrument. The basics include fingering of notes, how to correctly blow the instrument and music terms that will be used in future years. The sixth grade band continues where the fifth grade left off the year before. The Band is involved in winter and spring concerts.
ArtSixth grade Art is a required 9 week course, offering the art student creative exercises and projects in the basic skills of drawing perspective, color and color theory, sculpture, pottery, and textiles. The units are designed to coordinate where possible with sixth grade social studies.
Study Skills
The 6th grade Study Skills Explorer class is based on a group of units that deal with critical thinking and listening skills. Some units covered are: matrix logic- where students are required to work problems of increasing difficulty, and a unit on listening and following directions. Students also have a simulation project where they must work cooperatively to solve daily problems.
Health
Health deals with the health concerns of the preadolescent. Drug and alcohol awareness is emphasized, but other areas the learner will also study will be nutrition, mental and emotional health, environmental health, and personal health.
Computers
Students continue to practice their keyboarding skills by using the program, Type To Learn 3. Sixth graders also reinforce their word processing skills by doing a variety of activities such as: creative writing projects, language skills, editing and proofreading skills and poetry. Career awareness is developed through the Nebraska Career Information Systems, where students are required to report on a career.

This nine-week course is divided into three different sections. The first portion is devoted to Computer Literacy--learning about the history and development of computers and parts and uses of computer systems. The second section deals with developing keyboarding skills using the computer keyboard and the keyboarding program 'Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. The third part of the class is focused on using keyboarding skills to type, format, and edit text using a word processing program. The ultimate goal of these three interrelated sections is to introduce and familiarize the student with the computer and its uses.

The students in 8th Grade Earth Science will proceed through a balanced sequence of activities that include the investigation of the composition and structure, geological processes, and history of the planet Earth and a study of the solar system, stars and galaxies. In addition to information presented in the student textbook, the 8th grade students will learn practical science process skills including: experimentation; data collecting; observation; graphing; and problem-solving techniques.
The eighth grade English program is divided into the following areas:
In this 7th and 8th grade class for nine weeks, students will refresh many concepts of reading and writing. This will be a hands-on, low student-to-teacher ratio class, so students will be able to improve their Language Arts skills.
The eighth grade Social Studies program is focused on the study of American History. The course helps students develop an understanding of America's past. The main content of the course follows American History from the colonization of the Western Hemisphere through the U.S. Civil War.
A continuation of the basic reading skills of decoding, comprehension, and reference and study skills taught in the eighth grade program. Emphasis is also placed in the development of good vocabulary skills. Students spend time studying specific genres of literature, such as mysteries, and also review the basic elements of literature. Once again the program strives to develop a lively and ever widening interest in reading through recreational reading activities.
The eighth grade students are required to take Physical Education on alternating days for the entire year. All classes are co-ed with activities taught in one to three week units. The program is conducted for all students to have an opportunity to participate and learn about fair play, safety, teamwork, and observation of rules. Personal hygiene is stressed through exercise, showering, and good health habits.
The objective of eighth grade Vocal Music is the continued study of basic concepts of music and the study of vocal techniques including tone production, diaphragm support, reading in bass and treble clef, and the use of phonics, pure vowels, diphthongs and consonants for good vocal sound and clear diction. Opportunities for performances are offered in and around the local community.
The eighth grade Band is for the students who have learned the basics of playing an instrument. This band program is broken up into two parts, the Marching Band and Concert Band.
